Handfasting Ceremony

Kirk and Katy have composed the wording of this themselves, and wanted you to have a copy so you can follow the ceremony.

The Expression of Intent:

Geraint: Kirk and Katy have chosen to incorporate the ancient Celtic ritual of handfasting in their wedding ceremony today. In Europe, until the mid 1700s few unions were sanctified in a church, rather, they were celebrated in a simple handfasting ceremony in which the two partners joined hands over the village anvil, in the fields, or in a grove of trees. The couple linked hands to form an infinity circle, symbolizing the entirety of the universe as represented in their relationship.

Kirk and Katy, know now before you go any further that since your lives have crossed in this life, you have formed an eternal bond. As you seek to enter this state of matrimony you should strive to make real ideals that give meaning to this ceremony and the sanctity of marriage. With full awareness, know that within this circle you are not only declaring your intent before your friends and family as witnesses, but you speak that intent to God.

The promises made today and the ties that are bound here greatly strengthen your union and will cross the years and lives of each souls growth. Do you seek to enter this ceremony?

Kirk and Katy: Yes.

Geraint: Kirk and Katy, please look in to each other’s eyes.

Katy and Kirk: (Hold hands, one partner with his/her left hand and the other with his/her right hand)

Dedication (blessing of the hands):

Geraint: These are the hands that will passionately love you and cherish you through the years, for a lifetime of happiness. These are the hands that will countless times wipe the tears from your eyes: tears of sorrow and tears of joy. These are the hands that will comfort you in illness, and hold you when you fear or grief racks your mind. These are the hands that will hold you tight as you struggle through difficult times. These are the hands that will give you support and encourage you to chase your dreams. Together, everything you wish for can be realised.

Prepare the cords:Handfasting

Geraint: Back in earlier years, the hands would be bound with whatever was available-vines, cords, scarves. Today we will use this cord to symbolise the binding, or promises.

Binding of the Hands:

Geraint: Katy, will you share in Kirk’s laughter and look for the brightness and the positive in her?

Katy: I will.

Geraint: Kirk, will you share in Katy’s laughter and look for the brightness and the positive in her?

Kirk: I will.

Geraint: And so the binding is made.

HandfastingGeraint: Katy, will you share in Kirk’s pain and seek to alleviate it?

Katy: I will.

Geraint: Kirk, will you share in Katy’s pain and seek to alleviate it?

Kirk: I will.

Geraint: And so the binding is made.

Geraint: Katy, will you share Kirk’s dreams?

Katy: I will.

HandfastingGeraint: Kirk, will you share Katy’s dreams?

Kirk: I will.

Geraint: And so the binding is made.

Geraint: Katy, will you share in Kirk’s burdens so that your spirits may grow in this union?

Katy: I will.

Geraint: Kirk, will you share in Katy’s burdens so that your spirits may grow in this union?

Kirk: I will.

Geraint: And so the binding is made.

Geraint: Katy, will you trouble Kirk?

HandfastingKaty: I may.

Geraint: Is that your intent?

Katy: No.

Geraint: Kirk, will you trouble Katy?

Kirk: I may.

Geraint: Is that your intent?

Kirk: No.

Geraint: Katy and Kirk will you be present in the challenges so that you may grow strong in this union.

HandfastingKirk and Katy: Yes.

Geraint: And so the binding is made.

Geraint: Katy, will you honour Kirk as an equal in this relationship?

Katy: I will.

Geraint: Kirk, will you honour Katy as an equal in this relationship?

Kirk: I will.

Geraint: And so the binding is made.

Geraint: Kirk and Katy, as your hands are bound together now, so your lives and spirits are joined in a union of love and trust. The bond of marriage is not formed by these cords, but rather by the vows you have made. Either of you may drop the cords, for as always you hold in your own hands the fate of this union.

HandfastingThe Hands of the Couple, Traditional Handfasting prayer:

Geraint: May these hands be blessed this day. May they always hold watch other. May they have the strength to hang on during storms of stress and the dark of disillusionment. May they remain tender and gentle as they nurture each other in their wondrous love. May they build a relationship founded in love, and rich in caring. May these hands be healer, protector, shelter, and guide for each other.

Apache blessing:

Geraint: Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for each other. Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth for the other. Now there is no more loneliness for you, for each of you will be companion to the other. Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you. Go now to your dwelling place to enter into the days of your life together. And may your days be good and long upon the earth. Treat yourselves and each other with respect, and remind yourselves of what brought you together. Give the highest priority to the tenderness, gentleness, and the kindness that your connection deserves. When frustration, difficulty and fear assail your relationship-as they threaten all relationships at one time or another-remember to focus on what is right between you, not only the part which seems wrong. In this way, you can ride out the storms when clouds hide the face of the sun in your lives-remembering that even if you lose sight of it for a moment, the sun is still there. And if each of you takes responsibility for the quality of your life together, it will be marked by abundance and delight.
